Coping with Curry Allergy
Curry is one of the few spices that adds flavor to food and most importantly, they are commendable when it comes to leaving a meat flavor and aroma on vegetables. However, there are a few people who exhibit curry allergy symptoms and mostly because of some its ingredients. In other words, there could be ingredients that you are naturally allergic to and when it comes to curry some of its ingredients include red pepper, coriander, fenugreek, and turmeric. Turmeric is a popular spice similar to ginger, known for its bright yellow color and use in curry powders and mustards.
If you want to get glowing skin naturally, reach for turmeric due to the powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory called curcumin that is in turmeric—these serious turmeric benefits brighten the skin, improve the skin’s complexion, and rejuvenate dull-looking skin. Other ingredients are fennel seed, caraway, asafetida, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, long pepper, black cardamom, green cardamom and other ingredients. In addition, curry spice ingredients will vary from one region to another meaning some of them will contain some of the extra ingredients and others will not. Therefore, curry allergy will vary from one person to another.
Signs of Curry allergy
Skin related symptoms: This is where one will develop some allergic reactions immediately and at times after 2 hours of eating the food. These signs refer to itchiness, rash, hives, swelling, and other skin related allergies. When it comes to this kind of allergy it also advisable to check on what ingredients it has using the label on the curry container. The reason being some people are allergic to red pepper and others are to refrain from nutmeg at all costs. Therefore, if you know your allergies then ensure you know all the ingredients in some of these spices.
Gastro-intestinal Reactions: This involves the digestive system where one develops abdominal cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. This should call for medical attention to prevent further dehydration caused by some of the curry allergy signs. In some instances, depending on the severity of the allergic reaction some may need to be put under drip in order rehydrate the body.
Respiratory reactions: These signs are more serious than the ones mentioned above because they touch the main source of oxygen in the body. Some of these symptoms are as a result of angioedema or the swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips, and throat which result in blocking the airway. Therefore, when the airway is blocked it may lead to lowering of the blood pressure or entering into anaphylactic shock and eventually death.
In other terms, once you observe these reactions then it would be advisable that you seek medical attention immediately. However, in as much as allergies can lead to death it is only on rare occasions but nonetheless; this should not mean that they cannot happen. In the event, you know you have such allergies it would also be advisable to tell your family or friends especially those who like using curry in their foods.
If you go to a grocer in India and ask for curry powder, you’re likely to be asked, “Which one?” There is no such thing as a single “curry powder” in Indian cuisine; each dish has its own combination of spices that makes it unique.
Every family also has their own recipes for spice mixes, so even classic dishes can taste vastly different from household to household. However, if you are looking for a place to start, then Madras curry powder is your best bet; it’s an earthy, fragrant blend of spices that you can tweak to your taste.
