Beer Allergy

Beer is one of the many drinks that contain little or low nutritional value implying that its health benefits are usually few. It is important to know that some of the ingredients in beer include wheat, gluten, barley, yeast and hop. There are beers that may contain some of the ingredients that your body cannot tolerate. For instance some beers offer gluten free alcohol alternatives and are made of grains such as buckwheat, rice and sorghum while others will contain wheat. For those who have an allergy towards wheat may need to look for gluten free alcohol and those who have yeast intolerance or allergy may have to avoid alcohol all together.

In other terms, you may not necessarily have a beer allergy but rather an allergy towards some of its ingredients. Otherwise, most of the beer allergy symptoms are histaminic in nature such that histamine levels rise to an extent of exhibiting some symptoms such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and others. Some of the beer allergy symptoms include signs such as:

  • Flushes
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Itchy skin
  • Shortness of breath

In the event you develop these symptoms it is important that you consult a doctor. On the other hand, there are those who develop allergic reactions towards salicylates which is a natural occurring chemical found in various foods such as vegetables, fruits and some seeds. These chemicals are high in yeast, grapes, beers and wines but very low in distilled alcohol. The chemical is known to trigger eczema and hives.

There are numerous beer allergy symptoms besides the ones mentioned earlier and this will include, insomnia, facial swelling, runny nose, vomiting, cough, tongue swelling, and watery eyes. In case you develop difficulty in breathing it is important to consult a doctor immediately. There are also cases where histamine levels are so high leading to anaphylactic shock whereby organs start shutting down. The best remedy for this reaction is administration of Epinephrine which controls the histamine levels in your body. In other words, whenever anyone develops histaminic reactions in the body also means that their diaxmine oxidase levels in their bodies are low.

In conclusion, the best solution is to avoid alcohol all together to reduce the rate of allergic reactions in your body. On the other hand, you may also need to know what you are particularly allergic to in alcohol so as to know what else to avoid. For instance, if you discover you have an allergy towards sulfates which are chemicals produced by yeast then it only means that you avoid foods containing yeast.
