Aspartame Allergy

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener which is found in numerous foods. It has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1981. Many experts and scientists believe that it should never have been approved by the FDA as they believe that aspartame can be toxic and people suffer from aspartame allergy. The aspartame has therefore been surrounded by a great deal of controversy as its defenders believe that this aspartame allergy does not even exist.

There are many scientists and experts who believe that aspartame has very toxic potential and should never have been approved by the FDA, but only was due to profit driven thought, and not based on science. The FDA however argue that this was not the case and the process was carried out thoroughly and fairly in order to deem aspartame safe for human use and consumption. They also claim that no scientific evidence has been able to prove aspartame to be dangerous for humans.

The general thought is however that this is very much a cover up by the FDA as there have been nearly 100 reported cases of symptoms of aspartame allergy. Also doctors have reported that these cases have been resolved once aspartame was removed from the diet. So this clearly shows a direct link between aspartame and danger to humans and many believe should be enough to remove it from the FDA approved list.

The problem with this however is that it is not accepted globally that aspartame allergy even exists. Many medical scientists and healthcare professionals are unconvinced of its existence.
Also the other problem is the wide range of symptoms which results from aspartame allergy could be the result of anything. These symptoms are normally :

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Nausea
  • Infertility
  • Dizziness
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety attacks

This wide range of symptoms makes diagnosis very difficult and leads many to believe aspartame allergy to just be a process of elimination rather than actually diagnosed from the outset. Aspartame allergy is also different for each person, it does not follow a strict pattern, nor do the symptoms last for a set amount of time. Some people are far more sensitive to it than others, and some suffer from all the symptoms mentioned above whereas others only one or a couple. Until any conclusive evidence is presented aspartame will remain present in our foods so you should be careful and if you suspect an allergy alert your doctor as soon as possible.

This article is biased for those who think the allergy is real. Aspartame is the most thoroughly tested food additive in existence (source: (
The stated statistics that there are “100 reported cases” and that “doctors have reported that these cases have been resolved once aspartame was removed from the diet.” does not “clearly [show] a direct link between aspartame and danger to humans…” These studies are observational, and observational studies are always confounded by lurking variables; thus, causation cannot be proven(
I implore you to remove the biased statements from this article or completely rewrite it, as well as include proper sources for its claims.

I find your statement illogical. I would like to trade spots with you and have you experience aspartame as an allergen and the ill experience of an anaphylaxis reaction. The reality of your face swelling, throat closing and your muscles in your back and neck tighten. Then you will finally understand this is real. Within minutes you could die. As your spouse wipes a tear from your face after he injects you with your epi pen because you no longer can help yourself. Because you and the FDA do not recognize the dangers of the allergy.

If one day, I die from this; I request your presence at my funeral and explain this to my husband and children that I did not pass away from aspartame allergy.

I find your statement interesting because the Mayo Clinic recongizes the allery.

I had allergic reaction to aspartame, Hives on my face, itching all over, and redness in the face, swallowing in face and tongue with sores in my mouth like canker sores… It took me over a year to figure out what I was allergic to, I have been to Doctors and Doctors to figure out what it was.. When I stopped taking aspartame in Crystal light my face and neck and my back cleared up. Now I am not exspert but I know when I am allergic to something. This crap is evil. I would touch that with a ten foot pole.I just hope their is no long lasting effects from drinking it. This should be pulled..
